Decathlon, one of the world’s largest sports retailers, has revealed it will open stores in the Philippines.

No details of the planned launch Decathlon Philippines have been revealed as yet. The move was heralded by Decathlon Thailand CEO Frederic Bichet, in an interview with Thai newspaper the Bangkok Post.

“The company plans to open its first store in the Philippines in the near future,” the newspaper quoted Bichet.

Inside Retail Asia Thailand expects the French-headquartered company will have formed a partnership with a local retail operator with SM Group being the most obvious front-runner.

The first Decathlon stores opened in Thailand only last year and already the company has built a network of seven in Bangkok and one each in Pattaya and Chiang Mai.

“Our expansion in Thailand is faster than in other countries,” Bichet said. “We took almost two years to open nine stores here, while we spend around one year to open one store in other countries.”

There are more than 1000 Decathlon stores in 28 countries, including one in Malaysia and two in Singapore.

Globally, Decathlon reported sales of €10 billion last year.
